as we get older I think we tend to reflect on wher are in the grand scheme of things.

I see the world turning upside down where common sense has become the absurd and absurd the norm. Alll one has to do is turn to the leaders of OUR nation and watch how they operate .

We are told thet all that is being done in the name of the greater good. Yet the true benefiiciaries are the leaders and the oligarcy of the extremely powerful and connnected. The last time I checked they aren't in the majority.

Once upon a time all persons had equal oppotunities to succeed or fail based solely on ones desire or lack of same. Now it seems only connected are going to be allowed to succceed and rest will be left to watch the fall and hopeful be around to pick up the pieces

Been a while since we've posted. Life gets in the way of everything that doesn't pay a buck. But it is time! (...)

Been a while since we've posted. Life gets in the way of everything that doesn't pay a buck. But it is time! And in keeping with the total lack of any theme here at Sid's Soap Box, I have created a new category for this post – "People & Relationships". Like we didn't have enough cannon fodder with government and politics?

Anyway, I decided to accept an invitation to drinks with a cute female friend at a local bistro last night. She's married, but she always has a large group of folks show up with plenty of beauties to talk to. I was feeling in the mood to perhaps meet someone new. My current flame of the past 2 years has been driving me crazy and it looks as though things are probably a wrap with her.

I tend to be on the quiet side, not the best way to break ice with strange women. But I am a good listener, a rare skill these days it seems. I find that when taking the role of listener in a social setting, the things I learn are not usually of a positive nature, LOL. You'd think at the ripe old age of 54, I'd be used to it. Used to what you ask?

Things like the guy who can't complete a sentence without the word "I" in it. Geeze… how impressive. Or the guy who seems to believe his personal worth as a man is dependent on how many famous names he can some how imply a relationship with his his past glory times.

And then there's this gorgeous Ukrainian blond. What a bombshell!! In her late 30's, she appears to be healthy, sane, and capable of long wonderful sessions between the sheets. So the usual conversation begins. She tells me that she's been in the country for 3 years or so. Then she proudly states that she works a high end cosmetic counter at a local department store. I silently feel sorry for her having such a sucky job, but smile and nod approvingly. No real problems so far, as long as shes happy, what do I care what she does?

So this gay guy sitting on the other side of me chirps up and starts name dropping all the high end cosmetics he can think of. Who gives a shit I think to my self. At this point the blond bombshell doesn't want to be out done so she starts in with the same crap, soon migrating to fashion. Twenty minutes later, they're exhausted. The blond has broke a sweat, she simply can't think of one more piece of designer clothing that she owns and can brag about! The gay guy, older than blondie by at least 15 years, feels victory. His experience has clearly produced more minutia than she has.

And here I sit between the two, with just one question on my mind (given up on the idea of future relationships with blondie). Priorities are the issue here! What the hell makes a woman think it's ok to own ten's of thousands of dollars worth of clothes when she's driving a piece of junk, living in an apartment with her pregnant 20 year old daughter and making big bucks at the cosmetic counter?? I just don't get it!

An old friend and I got together for dinner last weekend. He had just ended a year old relationship with a sexy blond. No regrets, he was enjoying having his time back. He confessed something I had been thinking about a lot lately though. He said the problem with relationships as you get older is that you have the experience to know what you want and what you don't want. I would agree with that. Great sex isn't enough for a relationship, bummer… You need to have a lot in common with someone for it to work.

My hostess for the evening made a comment near the end of the night. Her and "the best diamond cutter in the world" and the gay guy were talking about a friend who had left a few minutes earlier. They admitted that the woman had give numerous accounts of her life over the years to them, and confessed that she must be full of shit because not one of them knew where she lived, or what she did for a living. My friend said "no big deal, we're all crazy in some way". I think shes right.

Now lets see, what's my criteria for a new lover – sane, employed, fit, sexy, likes sex!, not addicted to drugs or alcohol, 30 – 50 range, likes the outdoors….

I'm doomed!

Ya know, the sad thing is that it's so easy to get ideas for Sid's Soap Box. I wish it weren't so, but it is…

Every morning I get my small news fix by cruising by the Yahoo Financial page. Frequently the headlines include something about the 100's of billions that the government is printing to bail out the dip shit's running corporate America.

Ya know what bugs me the most about this plan?? All of the homeowners who are hurting and loosing their jobs and houses aren't getting any benefit from this bail out. I recently had a friend who contacted his mortgage company to see if they would drop is interest rate a little to help him out. He was promptly informed that assistance was only available to him AFTER he was 3 months behind on his payments. So lets see here, ruin my credit first, then maybe you'll help me. How screwed up is that??

Meanwhile, let's think for a minute what's going to happen to all of these ropo'd houses that are going back to the banks. These same banks that are getting billions of taxpayer dollars to keep from failing are going to own these properties. Do you think that just maybe a few of these fatcats might form some business ventures to buy these distressed properties from the bank and sell them back to the public at a profit?

Is it just me or is there a major problem with this plan? Instead of giving the money to the loosers who can't run a bank, why not give the failing homeowner a nice 30 year fixed rate mortgage at 3% for zero points and no closing costs? You keep the family in the house. They maintain it, helping the neighboorhood property values. They survive financially, providing stimulus to the local economy. All seems like a much better idea to me…

But what do I know, I'm just a middle class working stiff.

There was a great article in the Albuquerque Journal about a single Mom being invited to President Elect Obama's "coronation". After reading this article I was perplexed. (...)

There was a great article in the Albuquerque Journal about a single Mom being invited to President Elect Obama's "coronation". After reading this article I was perplexed. This woman was being recognized for the help she gave to the Obama campaign during the election.
She is a real modern day hero. She has persevered to raise her two children. One is now a senior at a St. Pius High School and the other is a junior at the University of New Mexico. I would say to this point she has been a exemplary role model for her children.
Now comes the perplexing part. She states that having to provide all the support and expense of raising her children is almost suffocating and extremely difficult. She is so glad that Mr. Obama will be our next president and she is sure he will be able help.
I don't understand what it is that needs to be fixed. A wonderful mother has gone out and provided all that has been necessary to raise her children to become productive citizens and it seems they are on their way to achieving just that. Along the way she has shown them that if something is really important to you, you can make it happen, if your willing to work hard and perservere.
I can't believe this mother is asking the incoming president to make things easier for her or anyone else. Is not this what has made this country the greatest country in the world. The notion that if one strives for the dream, that dream can be earned. Surely she is not saying its too hard for others to do what she has done and they will not be able to accomplish their goals in life without the help of the government.
Our forefathers (& foremothers) didn't ask for help when nature and pestulance destroyed their livelihood. They got up and made it happen. They never expected help from the government. They helped each other.
We do not cherish that which is gained to easily.
The lesson this mother has taught her children, by exmple is a good lesson. Is the next lesson going to be if things get too hard the government will BAIL US OUT?

Now I will admit. On the grand scale of things this is minor. But it's so stupid I can't stand it anymore. I gotta say something.

Sid and I live in Albuquerque. Now Abq is a great place to live, no mistake about that. But one of the down sides is allergies. We have lots of them and the dry climate tends to make us blond haired blue eyed folks even more sensitive to it.

So here's what I don't understand. Why is it OK for every landscaping company in the whole damn town to just blow all of the trash and leaves from the job sites into the streets?? That is the standard practice here. What the hell are they thinking? All those leaves are covered with dust and pollen. Right into the street where all the cars and trucks dive over them and grind them into a fine powder that gets thrown into the air so the rest of us can breath that crap! How stupid is that?

Put the damn leave blower away, get out a rake and bag the damn leaves! Then haul them off to the dump! I am amazed that this is legal.

There, I said it. Feels better…
